I arrange a number of trips / holidays designed specifically for the enthusiastic photographers with a real interest in photographing wildlife. I don't run this operation on a truly commercial basis so don't offer many holiday trips at any one time but those I do offer have been very carefully selected to provide truly exciting and rewarding opportunities.

My aim on all these trips is quite simple, to help you master many of the field techniques required of a competent wildlife photographer and to come away having improved your technique, your knowledge of the subjects and with some memorable images.

Aswell as being an experienced wildlife photographer and naturalist I am a qualified teacher and tutor able to support everyone from the novice photographer to those who are considerably more experienced. I limit the numbers on all my trips so that I can personally assist and support you and be on hand to help you improve and refine your photographic skills understanding better digital photography techniques and how to achieve creative images.

Big Cats of the Massai Mara 2018

A very popular 9 day escorted photographic workshop to Kenya's famous Massai Mara region.

    22nd February - 3rd March 2018 - Fully booked

Cost for 2018

Due to the current volatility in the US Dollar and UK Pound exchange rates we have taken the decision to price the holiday in US Dollars and to the airfare separately in UK pounds.

Monies you pay as a deposit will be converted on the day of transfer at that day's exchange rate. If you require this rate can then be "pegged" as the rate to be used when the balance is paid thus ensuring you know the total price of your holiday in sterling in advance. Alternatively you can take a risk on the exchange rates prevailing at the time your deposit is due.

African element $6,040
Plus international economy flights from £740

Total approx £5,499 (as at 30th May 2017)

(unlike some other providers we provide prices including all air fares from London Heathrow, local internal transfers, full board accommodation, laundry, park fees, guiding fees etc. See detailed itinerary for more information).

The Massai Mara is deservedly known as Africa’s greatest wildlife reserve, and is famous for the abundance of lion, the other big cats, the Great Wildebeest Migration and the Masai people. It is without a doubt Africa’s most well know and famous safari destination.

The area has become well know having featured in many excellent TV programmes including the BBC’s long running “Big Cat Diaries” and “Big Cat Week” as well as the more recent Disney Nature’s “African Cats”. Staying in luxury bush camps the big cats will definitely be on our agenda but we will also have ample opportunities to photograph the wide variety of other wildlife this area supports.

Each trip will be limited to a maximum of 8 people and is often less. We’ll be staying at Kicheche a small and extremely comfortable classic tented camp hidden in a beautiful acacia valley overlooking the Olare Orok stream. With only 8 tents the intimate and relaxed atmosphere gives you the opportunity to enjoy a unique experience in this private wildlife area of the Mara North Conservancy

As the subject of countless wildlife documentaries Africa needs little introduction and is on many photographers wish list as a place to visit. All this history, exposure and increased accessibility brings with it problems of pressure on the wildlife and its habitat.

As a wildlife photographer with a passion for Africa the challenge is to find a location near enough to airports to enable you to take your heavy camera gear but sufficiently isolated to ensure unspoilt game viewing in unspoilt areas. For this trip I have created a photo safari exploring two very different areas of central Africa both well known for their elephant populations and bird life but with all the other game including the big cats in equal abundance.

This trip specifically designed for the enthusiastic wildlife photographers interested in learning more about their camera and at the same time capturing some memorable images. Each trip will be limited to a maximum of 8 people and is often less. We’ll be staying in two very different camps - the first using a private mobile camp in the Chobe National Park Botswana and the other in the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe with an overnight stay in between giving us a chance to explore the world renowned Victoria Falls in the middle.

In Chobe we will be will be chartering a unique boat that has been specifically designed for photographers. Check the link on the full details page – link below – for a video of this boat and its unique arrangements.

The camp we will be using in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park is a very new one, opening in 2012, and is owned and run by the famous professional safari guide Dave Carson.

This safari is timed for late February early March when every year when roughly a million and a half wildebeest gather on the short grass plains of the Southern Serengeti to give birth.  Extraordinarily over 500,000 calves are born in the space of a few weeks. The spectacle is truly breath taking; the plains cover many thousands of square miles, so the sense of space is overwhelming.  You can drive for hours off road, and never be out of sight – or sound - of wildebeest.

The short grass plains come to life at this time. The Wildebeest return from the north after their search for pastures during the dry season. The grass here is particularly rich in salts and minerals, providing the ideal conditions for the wildebeest cows to give birth to their babies.

The predators, especially the cats, take advantage of this proliferation of young animals and this is an excellent area to see cheetah, lions and hyena. It may seem that the wildebeest are doing the predators a favour by dropping their young all at the same time, but in fact a surfeit of wildebeest in very short period results in the predators’ becoming satiated and unable to consume as much as they would if the calving happened over a longer time span.

We we spend the majority of our time at Ndutu lodge a comfortable safari camp with a series of stone built cottages and a central dining area overlooking the lake Ndutu and the Ndutu plains. You will be able to watch game whilst you eat your meals or sup a drink at the bar! The camp is situated in an area right at the southernmost end of the Serengeti but crucially outside the reserve boundaries thus permitting off road driving. It’s in the very centre of the Wildebeest birthing plains and is often referred to as the Secret Serengeti.

In addition we visit Lake Manayara National Park famed for its tree climbing lions and birdlife and make a trip down into the Ngoro Ngoro crater to see large tuskers and black rhinos as well as many other unique species found in this amazing natural arena and 8th wonder of the world.

Wildebeest Birthing and Top Predators and Gorilla Extension 2018

The first part of this safari is the same as the Southern Serengeti Migration Safari and the extension is a once in a life time opportunity to photograph and trek wild mountain gorillas in the Bwindi National Park and Forest of Uganda. No other wildlife encounter in Africa matches the astounding experience of spending time face-to-face with wild gorillas. Gorillas are a species are on the brink of extinction and treks are a highly restricted activity. Encountering our distant cousins in mist-draped forests of Bwindi’s impenetrable forest is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Our professional guide and trackers will lead us into the forest’s secret paths, looking for a habituated gorilla family. Once found, we will approach the gorillas quietly and settle down to observe them from between 7 and 10m away. You’ll spend an hour with the gorillas, watching the adults forage and groom each other while the babies tumble and play. All the time you’ll be under the watchful gaze of the great silverback patriarch. Whilst calmly eating his soft brown eyes are constantly watching you and his family. Witnessing and photographing gorillas is a truly profound experience and one of the reasons that gorilla trekking is such a life changing encounter.

The Great Wildebeest Migration and
Mara river crossings - Private Workshop

An private escorted photographic workshop to Kenya's famous Masai Mara region specially timed for the epic wildebeest migration.

I arrange this as a special private safari for intersted guests in late August or early Sepetmber. If you are intersted please enquire further.

The Great Wildebeest Migration is often described as one of the “Seven Wonders of the Natural World” and has been the subject of many a stirring TV program or film. Join me Bob Brind-Surch to experience and, under my expert guidance, photograph this for yourself.

Nowhere else on land is there a movement of animals as immense, over two million animals migrate from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the greener pastures of the Masai Mara in Kenya during July through to October. This is an annual wildlife spectacular not to be missed! Each year 1.5 million Wildebeest and 300,000 Zebra make their long trek from the Serengeti north to the Masai Mara. At one point the migration has to cross the mighty Mara River and its tributaries where crocodiles and other predators wait to feast on those unlucky enough to get caught. Those that manage to cross will then be hunted, stalked, and run down by the larger carnivores of which the area is famous.

Staying in a luxury bush camps the migration is our main traget but the game viewing in the area is also spectacular and we will also have ample opportunities to photograph the wide variety of other wildlife this area supports.
